The severe destruction destined for the land of Judah and the city of Jerusalem will serve as clear testimony to the consequences of breaking a sacred agreement with God. The sheer scale of the ruin will prompt onlookers to ask what could have possibly caused such a terrible disaster.

When this question is raised, the friends and companions of those asking will be the ones to provide the explanation [מצודת דוד]. They will answer that the tragedy was a direct result of the people abandoning their covenant with God. By turning to idolatry and choosing to worship other gods, the nation brought about its own downfall. It is specifically because of this betrayal and the rejection of their promise to Him that the land will be lost and Jerusalem will be reduced to a barren wasteland [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
