Jeremiah 22:22Sefaria

When a nation places its trust in political alliances and human leadership rather than in God, the inevitable collapse of those supports brings a painful awakening. The shattering of these false pillars ultimately leads to deep regret and a profound sense of humiliation.

Commentators differ on the identity of the leaders who will face this downfall. One perspective suggests that these figures are the internal kings and leaders of the nation Conversely, another approach views these guides as the foreign powers—specifically Assyria and Egypt—who acted as patrons and provided for the nation's needs

The impending destruction of these leaders is brought about by a strong east wind. Most commentators explain this imagery as a violent shattering, where the wind will completely crush the leadership This fierce wind represents King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who is destined to bring about their ruin [מצודת דוד]. Other interpretations suggest that this wind will consume the leaders, scatter them in every direction [רד״ק, מלבי״ם], or simply sweep them away from their places of power [שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, the foreign nations that the people embraced with bonds of friendship, such as Assyria and Egypt, will also meet a tragic fate and be taken into captivity

The culmination of these events will force a harsh realization. Only after the trusted foreign powers are exiled, and the people witness Nebuchadnezzar capturing the kings and leaders of Judah, will they finally recognize the grave error of abandoning God to rely on flesh and blood This awakening will bring about two distinct forms of disgrace: a deep, internal sense of personal shame, alongside an external humiliation inflicted by others
