A prophecy of destruction takes the shape of a dramatic nature scene, where a conquering army acts like woodcutters chopping down a magnificent forest and setting it ablaze. This vivid imagery shows the sheer force of the ruin destined for the nation's leadership and its grand buildings.

God Himself summons and readies these destroyers for their mission [מצודת ציון, רש״י]. The attackers arrive fully equipped, though their gear can be understood in different ways. Some commentators view their equipment as standard weapons of war [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], while others explain that they carry heavy smashing tools designed specifically to tear down houses and structures [רד״ק].

The image of the invading force cutting down the choicest cedars continues the theme of a city compared to the great forest of Lebanon [רש״י]. These cedars carry two distinct meanings. On a human and political level, cutting down the trees symbolizes the slaughter of the nation's officers and heroes by the enemy forces [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, the cedars represent the physical architecture of the city. In this view, they are the high-quality wooden beams used to roof and panel the walls of luxurious homes. The destroyers will shatter these grand structures and ultimately throw the wood into the fire, burning the houses to the ground [רד״ק].
