The entire universe ultimately mobilizes against a wicked person, stripping away the veil of secrecy from his crimes and actively bringing about his downfall. A person who does wrong often works hard to hide his actions, but the heavens eventually force those hidden deeds into the light [מלבי״ם]. This exposure takes the form of disasters falling from above. A sudden flood of troubles serves as a public proof of guilt, making his secret sins obvious to anyone watching [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There are different ways to understand how this heavenly exposure takes place. It can be a physical punishment, such as fire and brimstone raining down. Alternatively, it can happen on a spiritual level, where heavenly angels announce his crimes as his ledger is reviewed and judged on high [רמב״ן, אלשיך].
At the same time, the earth acts as an active enemy rising up to attack him [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This rebellion takes place across several different dimensions. On a natural level, the physical ground rejects the wrongdoer; his fields simply stop producing crops, yielding only thorns and thistles instead [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד]. On a human level, the people living on the earth turn against him. Even the most lowly and despised nations will rise up to cause him harm and steal his property, mirroring the tragic events that happened to Job himself [רמב״ן, אלשיך]. Finally, on a deeper and more hidden level, the earth represents the Divine Presence. God Himself rises against the wrongdoer to deliver justice, exact punishment, and completely cut off any flow of blessing [חומת אנך].
