איוב, פרק כ׳, פסוק ו׳

Job 20:6Sefaria

אִם־יַעֲלֶ֣ה לַשָּׁמַ֣יִם שִׂיא֑וֹ וְ֝רֹאשׁ֗וֹ לָעָ֥ב יַגִּֽיעַ׃

The success of wicked individuals in this world can often appear limitless and unshakable. They seem to reach the absolute peak of power, elevated far above everyone else. The imagery of immense height captures this state, representing both the physical stature of the wicked [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and a profound sense of arrogance, honor, and superiority [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that ascending to the heavens and reaching the clouds serves as a powerful metaphor for their vast wealth, flawless health, and unmatched social standing [מצודת דוד, תקות אנוש, אלשיך].

This imagery can be understood as a two-part progression. It begins with the conceptual arrogance of rising in honor and status, and then intensifies into a striking picture: it is as if the wicked person physically grows until his head actually touches the clouds [מלבי״ם], which represent the ultimate peak of achievement [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite this picture of massive success, the situation is merely a temporary illusion. The immense prosperity and arrogance of the wicked are actually the very preparation for their downfall. God elevates the wicked to these extreme heights for a specific reason: so that their eventual fall will be far more devastating. It is much like someone who lifts an enemy high into the air only to smash him down into the ground with overwhelming force [מלבי״ם]. Therefore, one should never be fooled into thinking that this prosperity is permanent, as the wicked will ultimately face complete destruction [תקות אנוש]. This inevitable collapse stands as a clear testimony to God's strict justice and His active providence over the world [אלשיך].
