Job 20:4Sefaria

When facing intense suffering, it is natural to look at the immediate surroundings and conclude that the world is unjust and that wickedness goes unpunished. Zophar directly challenges this limited worldview, doubting the claim that those who do wrong ultimately succeed. He poses a piercing, rhetorical question filled with astonishment, presenting an undeniable truth about the long arc of human history This challenge points toward a fundamental reality and a set of rules that have governed the world since the dawn of time, from the very moment humanity was first placed on earth

At the heart of this confrontation is a debate about human logic and observation. A person might try to prove that the wicked prosper by simply looking at their current, immediate reality. However, true logical deduction requires examining the entirety of time and every minute detail. Because a person lives only during a specific era and witnesses just a fraction of reality, it is impossible to make sweeping judgments about how God manages the world without considering the complete scope of history [מלבי״ם].

What exactly is this historical truth that should be understood from the beginning of humanity? The primary approach among commentators is that history itself proves God never perverts justice. Any success enjoyed by the wicked is always short-lived and lacks true permanence, a reality that should be well recognized Alternatively, a more spiritual perspective connects this ancient truth to the Torah, which preceded the creation of the world. In this view, the answer to current suffering is found by looking back at the first man. The trials experienced now are fundamentally similar to the consequences faced by the first human, offering a deeper, original context for human hardship [אלשיך].
