יונה, פרק ג׳, פסוק א׳

Jonah 3:1Sefaria

וַיְהִ֧י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־יוֹנָ֖ה שֵׁנִ֥ית לֵאמֹֽר׃

Following the violent storm at sea and a miraculous rescue from the belly of the fish, the prophetic bond between God and Jonah is restored. This renewed connection carries a complex blend of divine kindness and strict justice. The original mission to the city of Nineveh simply resumes, picking up exactly where it was broken off by the prophet's escape. Jonah is once again tasked with warning the city's inhabitants to repent [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, צאינה וראינה].

Experiencing a prophetic vision outside the borders of the Land of Israel is an extraordinary event. Jonah is only able to receive God's message in a foreign land because he had already achieved prophecy while living in Israel. Although leaving the land naturally causes a decline and a certain flaw in a person's spiritual standing, the spiritual heights Jonah reached while there are never fully erased. This lasting foundation allows him to remain on a higher spiritual plane than the people of other nations [חומת אנך].

Beneath the surface of this renewed mission lies a deeper, more critical reality. The prophecy is granted to Jonah a second time, but it will never be granted a third. Because Jonah initially chose to protect the people of Israel at the expense of God's honor, he faces a consequence that perfectly mirrors his own actions. He originally ran away and rejected his calling, and as a result, the gift of prophecy ultimately flees from him. Even though tradition notes that Jonah lived a long life of over a hundred years, he never receives another prophetic message during all that time, aside from these two calls regarding Nineveh [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. His initial refusal leaves a permanent mark on his spiritual journey, ultimately closing the door to any future prophetic communication.
