יונה, פרק ג׳, פסוק ב׳

Jonah 3:2Sefaria

After being saved from the belly of the fish, Jonah receives a renewed mandate from God. The mission to Nineveh is reinstated, and God's directive to set out immediately indicates that Jonah is brought to shore in a location relatively close to the city. The path is now clear and direct for him to finally carry out his task [אבן עזרא].

God instructs Jonah to deliver a specific proclamation to the city. This message is a blend of the original instruction and a new, immediate directive to announce the city's impending destruction due to its wickedness [רד״ק]. Although the exact words of this warning are not detailed at this moment, they become entirely clear through Jonah's later actions, when he publicly cries out that the city will be overthrown in forty days [מצודת דוד].

A significant difference emerges between Jonah's initial calling at the start of the book and this current command. Originally, God noted that the evil of Nineveh had risen before Him. Now, however, God simply commands Jonah to deliver the message. This shift occurs because the judgment of the people of Nineveh is already sealed. Jonah's mission is no longer a mere warning about their behavior. Instead, it is a definitive prophetic declaration that their doom is finalized, and the city will be destroyed in forty days as a result of a firm divine decree [מלבי״ם].
