The allocation of the tribal territories on the eastern side of the Jordan River comes to a close by focusing on the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan. Ruling from the cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei, Og held a highly unusual historical background. He was the last remaining member of the Rephaim, an ancient nation of giants, a few of whom still lived in the land during that era [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
His unique status as a survivor traces back to a much earlier conflict. The Rephaim had been struck down by Chedorlaomer and his allied kings at Ashteroth Karnaim, and Og was the one who remained from that ancient defeat [רש״י]. Ultimately, his reign came to an end when Moses defeated him and his people. Moses completely drove them out of their territory, transferring the land to the Israelites [מצודת ציון].
