פרשת בהעלותך

Numbers 8:1Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

The journey of the Israelites out of Egypt reaches a major turning point as they transition into becoming God's nation. Following a long period dedicated to receiving laws and constructing the Tabernacle, the people now begin the practical preparations required to fulfill their spiritual destiny [רש ר הירש]. This new phase involves direct communication from God, occurring immediately after Moses enters the Tent of Meeting to hear His voice. Because God could speak to Moses even during the night, the sanctuary required physical light. Consequently, the very first instruction given is to light the Menorah, ensuring that Moses has an illuminated path as he approaches to receive God's word [אברבנאל].

Beyond practical illumination, this moment establishes the distinct spiritual roles among the leaders of the nation. Moses achieved the ultimate level of prophecy, possessing the ability to enter the Holy of Holies at any time to hear God. Aaron did not share in this direct experience of hearing His voice. Instead, he was granted his own unique spiritual stature. His daily entry into the sanctuary to light the Menorah highlights this special role, as the Menorah represents the deep wisdom that brings light to the human soul [אברבנאל].

In addition to these practical and symbolic meanings, this duty holds a deeper hidden purpose. The physical act of lighting the earthly Menorah in the Tabernacle was designed to have a parallel effect in the spiritual realm. By tending to the lamps below, Aaron simultaneously illuminated a spiritual Menorah in the heavenly Tabernacle, bringing about a state of profound unity and supreme holiness [אלשיך].
