Proverbs 20:27Sefaria

Deep within the human experience lies a profound connection between the physical body and divine providence. The human soul functions as a divine lamp, an inner light that illuminates the most hidden layers of a person's inner life and intellect. This spiritual emanation is drawn directly from the light of God. Because it is entirely nonphysical, this inner light serves as a testament to the eternal nature of the soul In practice, this divine lamp represents the human intellect and the rational mind

The light of this lamp reaches into the deepest, most concealed spaces of a person, such as the heart, secret thoughts, and matters entirely hidden from the eye The purpose of this profound internal illumination is understood in two distinct ways.

From one perspective, this inner light is an instrument of divine providence and judgment. Just as a person carries a physical lamp to search through the dark, God uses the human soul to examine and expose a person's most closely guarded thoughts Because the soul is a piece of the divine that fills the entire body, it proves that God's awareness penetrates even the most physical and murky aspects of human existence [אלשיך]. Consequently, the soul is intimately aware of every action and thought. Ultimately, it will serve as a witness to testify about the person during divine judgment [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אלשיך], for nothing is concealed from it, not even the truths a person manages to hide from themselves [שטיינזלץ].

A contrasting perspective focuses on the empowering capacity of human intellect. Rather than serving as an instrument of divine scrutiny, the divine lamp is given to people so they can independently seek out and uncover hidden truths. Empowered by the brilliance that God grants the mind, a person can pierce through ignorance to explore the mysteries of reality, the depths of Torah and wisdom, and complex spiritual concepts Situated in the mind, the soul radiates this light of intellect and understanding downward, illuminating the rest of the body and the inner self [אבן עזרא].
