Building a solid strategy requires careful planning and the ability to keep advice confidential. However, associating with the wrong people can easily destroy any plan, as they may expose sensitive information to opponents [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. The primary approach among commentators is that there are three specific types of individuals to avoid forming partnerships with [אלשיך, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].
The first is someone who simply cannot keep a secret. By nature, this person lacks a faithful spirit and is fundamentally incapable of keeping things to themselves. The second is the intentional gossip who actively spreads rumors. Even if they do not mean to cause harm in a specific instance, a person who habitually gossips will inevitably leak important secrets just through their constant chatter [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The third type is someone who speaks without thinking. Many explain this as a foolish individual who chatters endlessly, innocently letting secrets slip without any malicious intent [אלשיך, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Others suggest this refers to a gullible person who is easily tricked by others into revealing confidential information [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, this describes a smooth talker who uses flattery to mislead the listener and draw them away from the proper path [רש״י, רלב״ג]. In all of these cases, the warning is clear: one must completely avoid associating or forming any partnerships with such individuals [מצודת ציון].
Beyond practical advice, these warnings apply to philosophical and spiritual matters. One perspective views the revealer of secrets as someone who shares the hidden depths of the Torah with those who are not worthy or ready for them [עמנואל הרומי]. Similarly, it serves as a warning against raising complex theological questions and philosophical doubts in front of the general public. Exposing these complicated thoughts causes confusion for those who cannot fully grasp them. Therefore, a person should avoid discussing such inquiries with others until their own faith and understanding are completely solid [רלב״ג].
On another level, these warnings represent two dangerous extremes in religious life. The revealer of secrets symbolizes an individual who believes that every commandment only has a hidden, inner meaning, mistakenly concluding that the actual physical performance of the commandments is unnecessary. Conversely, the thoughtless speaker represents the opposite extreme, symbolizing a person who believes the Torah has no inner depth at all and focuses entirely on the surface level. Both of these extreme approaches are deeply flawed and must be kept at an absolute distance [עמנואל הרומי].
