Proverbs 20:18Sefaria

מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת בְּעֵצָ֣ה תִכּ֑וֹן וּ֝בְתַחְבֻּל֗וֹת עֲשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָֽה׃

Successfully turning a concept into reality and navigating conflict requires early planning, deep investigation, and strategic thinking rather than a reliance on mere instincts or brute force. The human mind is frequently flooded with a stream of possibilities, ideas, and doubts. To prevent these concepts from simply floating away unfulfilled, a person must carefully select a precise path of action to ground their ideas in reality [מלבי״ם]. This process requires examining the truth, filtering through internal confusion, and weighing all contradictory options [רלב״ג, אלשיך]. The primary approach among commentators is that the best way to solidify an idea is by seeking the counsel of wise advisors, which ensures the plan is refined and executed perfectly.

When facing direct conflict, victory cannot be secured through sheer physical strength or weaponry alone. It requires wisdom, cleverness, and cunning [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. Because the enemy is also consulting advisors and forming plans, one must develop a complex, interconnected web of strategies. By working with multiple advisors, a person can prepare for every possible scenario the opponent might present [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. True strategic sophistication involves hiding one's actual intentions to catch the opponent off guard [אלשיך]. It also demands flexibility, knowing when to apply force, seek legal action, pursue peace, or even divide one's resources, much like Jacob did when confronting Esau [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond physical battles, this strategic approach applies to the constant inner spiritual struggle against the evil inclination and Satan, who constantly seek to make a person stumble. Just as a physical war requires careful tactics, so does the battle for personal refinement. A person must actively identify and reject harmful thoughts that distance them from perfection [רלב״ג]. Success in this inner conflict comes from finding guidance within the Torah to overcome negative desires gradually and wisely [עמנואל הרומי], as well as employing practical spiritual tools like repentance, prayer, and fasting [רש״י].
