Proverbs 20:1Sefaria

לֵ֣ץ הַ֭יַּיִן הֹמֶ֣ה שֵׁכָ֑ר וְכׇל־שֹׁ֥גֶה בּ֝֗וֹ לֹ֣א יֶחְכָּֽם׃

Excessive indulgence in alcohol or physical pleasures clouds the mind and blocks the path to true wisdom. Drunkenness goes far beyond a temporary loss of control; it serves as a gateway to casting off moral restraints, treating serious matters with disrespect, and abandoning core values. The primary approach among commentators is that this dynamic applies directly to the person drinking. A person consumed by wine transforms into a mocker, becoming loud and unruly in an intoxicated state. As the habit deepens, ordinary wine is no longer enough to satisfy the craving. The drinker begins to shout and demand much stronger, older, and more potent alcohol [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, אמרי דעת].

Alternatively, the drinks themselves can be viewed through the lens of personification. In this light, wine acts as the mocker, laughing at the laws of human intellect and driving a person toward erratic behavior. Strong drink drags the individual even lower, reducing them to a state of loud, animalistic noise entirely stripped of reason and thought [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי].

There are several ways to understand how a person goes astray through this behavior. It can be seen as a fundamental error in judgment. A person might notice that a small amount of wine relaxes and opens the mind, leading to the mistaken belief that drinking heavily will bring even greater wisdom. However, while a little may be beneficial, excessive consumption causes severe harm, ensuring the drinker will never become truly wise [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective views this error as the tragedy of someone who willingly enters a state of intoxication. Once drunk, any mistakes or sins committed are treated as intentional acts. The individual becomes trapped in a cycle of addiction, completely unable to learn from failures or grow wiser [אלשיך]. A third approach understands this straying as a constant obsession. A person who delights in drinking becomes entirely preoccupied with it, leaving no time, energy, or mental space for learning and personal growth [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי, אבן עזרא].

On a broader metaphorical level, intoxicating drinks represent the pursuit of all worldly pleasures. The human intellect and physical desires act as bitter rivals competing for control over a person. Consequently, anyone who dedicates their soul to the love of physical indulgence will never truly succeed in acquiring wisdom [עמנואל הרומי].
