Proverbs 20:29Sefaria

תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת בַּחוּרִ֣ים כֹּחָ֑ם וַהֲדַ֖ר זְקֵנִ֣ים שֵׂיבָֽה׃

The cycle of life presents a distinct kind of beauty at every stage, with each period possessing its own unique virtue. Just as physical strength is the crowning glory of the young, advanced age grants the elderly a profound splendor that replaces the bodily vigor they no longer possess [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This advanced stage reflects more than merely growing old; it is a testament to natural longevity [מלבי״ם]. The true beauty of these later years stems from spiritual and intellectual growth. While youth is defined by physical might, old age is a time when genuine wisdom and settled thoughts take root in a person's heart [רלב״ג]. Furthermore, reaching such a ripe age serves as evidence that an individual is not among the wicked, whose lives are often cut short. As the turbulent desires of youth finally calm, an older person becomes free to draw closer to God, step away from worldly temptations, and guide those around them toward good deeds [עמנואל הרומי].

These two stages of life can also be viewed as a continuous process of cause and effect. The glory of the young lies in actively preserving their physical strength by avoiding sin and destructive desires. A young person who protects their vitality, rather than ruining it, will eventually merit a natural, long life. By doing so, they avoid the premature aging that often results from the physical toll of wrongful behavior [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

From a completely different perspective, these stages of life offer practical guidance for leadership and the administration of justice. A young leader might rely too heavily on their strength and issue rulings out of impulsiveness. Conversely, an elderly leader might lose their sense of compassion for the younger generation, valuing only those who share their own advanced age. Because of these natural tendencies, both the strength of the young and the seasoned splendor of the old must be tempered with kindness. This compassion softens strict judgment and ensures a balanced, righteous legal system [אלשיך].
