Proverbs 22:18Sefaria

True wisdom requires a journey from the mind to the mouth. It is not enough to simply hear a good idea; it must take root inside and then find its way into spoken words. The primary approach among commentators is that the process of acquiring knowledge brings a deep sense of sweetness and pleasantness This joy is unlocked when a person does more than just listen. They must take the teachings and store them deeply within, truly absorbing them into their heart

Yet, holding wisdom inside is only half the process. To truly preserve these teachings and keep them from fading away, a person must speak them out loud and review them verbally [רש״י, אלשיך]. By constantly verbalizing what they have learned, the knowledge becomes fluent and organized. This practical habit ensures that a person does not have to rely on books, which may not always be around. Instead, the wisdom is always ready and clear, free from confusion, allowing the person to easily answer questions, guide others, and teach

In contrast to the idea of sweetness, another perspective introduces a theme of instability. From this viewpoint, if someone merely accepts teachings blindly and keeps them hidden inside without the ability to explain them, their understanding remains loose and wandering. True clarity is only achieved through speech. When a person fully grasps a concept to the point that they can clearly articulate it, the knowledge stops shifting and becomes firmly and permanently established [מלבי״ם].
