Proverbs 22:26Sefaria

אַל־תְּהִ֥י בְתֹֽקְעֵי־כָ֑ף בַּ֝עֹרְבִ֗ים מַשָּׁאֽוֹת׃

Biblical wisdom offers a strong caution against unnecessary financial entanglement, specifically the danger of taking responsibility for the debts of others. People often place themselves into legal and financial bondage simply to guarantee someone else's loans. A person should actively distance themselves from the company of those who habitually shake hands and make financial commitments on behalf of others [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. At times, an individual might find themselves in a social circle where co-signing loans is common practice, driven by a desire to show off or by peer pressure. In these situations, it is crucial to resist the pressure, carefully weigh actual financial capabilities, and remember that there is no obligation to accept such burdens [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The risk is severe and tangible. If the original borrower fails to pay and the co-signer cannot cover the cost, the creditor can seize all of the co-signer's property, going so far as to take the very bed linens they sleep on [עמנואל הרומי].

Commentators offer different perspectives on the dual nature of this warning. Some view the repeated cautions as a poetic way of emphasizing the same basic idea [מצודת דוד]. Others, however, see precise distinctions between different types of risk. One approach suggests a division based on the level of liability: the primary warning is against becoming an absolute, direct guarantor who takes full responsibility for repayment, while the secondary caution applies to taking on even a standard, lesser level of financial backing [מלבי״ם]. Taking a completely different direction, another perspective separates the concepts entirely. In this view, the initial warning is against making oaths related to loans, an act that carries the risk of heavy spiritual damage, while the subsequent warning addresses the practical danger of entering into a financial guarantee [אלשיך].
