Proverbs 22:10Sefaria

גָּ֣רֵֽשׁ לֵ֭ץ וְיֵצֵ֣א מָד֑וֹן וְ֝יִשְׁבֹּ֗ת דִּ֣ין וְקָלֽוֹן׃

Social conflict rarely arises in a vacuum; it is often fueled by underlying catalysts that poison the atmosphere. To achieve lasting peace, one must identify and uproot the very source of the tension rather than merely managing the symptoms.

The primary approach among commentators is that the root of such discord is often a lightheaded, irresponsible individual who habitually mocks and humiliates others. This person does not necessarily engage in direct fights. Instead, they act as an instigator, stirring up arguments, complicating the lives of those around them, and creating an environment ripe for conflict. The practical solution is direct and uncompromising: expel this individual from the home and from society. By removing the cause of the friction, its destructive consequences naturally fade away [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי].

Once this instigator is removed, the arguments and bitter claims that fuel the conflict disappear [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], though some suggest it is the quarrelsome person himself who is finally removed from the community [עמנואל הרומי]. Consequently, the need for legal battles ceases [מצודת ציון]. Without the constant instigation, people no longer find themselves dragged into courtrooms or requiring the intervention of judges [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Along with the end of these legal disputes comes the end of public shame and mutual disgrace, which are the inevitable results of bitter fights and public trials [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the practical social dynamics, this situation operates on a deep spiritual level. The mocking instigator can be understood allegorically as the evil inclination itself [רש״י]. A physical person who is idle, empty of substance, and consumed by gossip actually serves as a vessel for Satan, who thrives in places of strife. Therefore, expelling such a person from the home is not merely about removing a problematic individual; it is the expulsion of Satan himself, who is the essence of the conflict. Taking this decisive action stops the social disgrace and halts the heavenly judgment that had already begun to strike those caught up in the dispute [אלשיך].
