Proverbs 22:11Sefaria

Achieving true character perfection requires a delicate balance of inner purity, a deep affection for others, and the ability to speak with grace and kindness. Such an individual stands in stark contrast to a troublemaker who stirs up conflict. Instead of sparking arguments, this refined person draws people together through love [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. At the core of this character is a heart completely washed clean of evil and negative motives

Commentators offer two main ways to understand the affection associated with this purity. One perspective suggests that this person simply harbors a genuine love for all humanity Another approach explains that the love is directed toward the virtues themselves, meaning this individual deeply values people who possess pure hearts and cherishes speech that is both knowledgeable and graceful

The pairing of a clean heart with graceful speech highlights a perfect alignment between a person's inner world and their outward expression. What is spoken matches exactly what is felt inside. There is no room for hypocrisy or empty flattery; every word is entirely sincere Because this inner purity is so authentic, listeners naturally receive the person's words with warmth. Even when offering extraordinary praise or respect to a friend, the speaker is never suspected of having hidden agendas or offering fake compliments [אלשיך]. The grace of their speech is effective precisely because it is rooted in deep honesty and understanding

Reaching this level of integrity brings a profound reward. The primary approach among commentators is that such an honest, articulate individual becomes a fitting companion, advisor, or representative for actual royalty. Kings constantly seek out truthful, reliable people they can fully trust Other perspectives suggest that a person with such elevated traits is either worthy of ruling themselves, or that they treat their peers with a level of dignity usually reserved for royalty Taking a more spiritual view, some explain that the title of king refers directly to God. In this understanding, God Himself becomes the close friend and companion of the one whose speech brings grace to the world [רש״י].
