Proverbs 22:23Sefaria

כִּֽי־יְ֭הֹוָה יָרִ֣יב רִיבָ֑ם וְקָבַ֖ע אֶת־קֹבְעֵיהֶ֣ם נָֽפֶשׁ׃

When human justice systems fail the most vulnerable, their protection shifts to a higher power. Harming a helpless individual transforms from a standard property crime into a direct clash with God, bringing severe consequences. There is a fundamental difference between stealing from the wealthy and stealing from the destitute. A crime against a wealthy person remains a regular financial dispute, as they possess the resources and power to defend themselves and seek justice. However, when a poor and defenseless person is targeted, they have no one to fight on their behalf. In this void, God personally steps in to defend them [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. This creates a dual conflict. The struggle belongs to the impoverished victim, but it simultaneously becomes God's own battle as He stands firmly by their side [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that the act committed against the poor is one of violent robbery and plunder [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון]. Yet, it is not an ordinary theft. It represents a uniquely severe form of stealing specifically directed at the poor, at consecrated items, or at divine gifts [מלבי״ם]. Because a poor person survives solely on what God graciously provides, stealing from them is considered equivalent to stealing from God Himself [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this type of theft carries an added dimension of physical injury and total destruction [אבן עזרא]. The guilt for this crime extends beyond the actual thief. It includes corrupt judges who silence the claims of the poor in court, making them full partners in the robbery [אלשיך].

Because of God's direct intervention, the consequences for harming the poor escalate severely from financial penalties to matters of life and death. Those who oppress the vulnerable will ultimately pay with their own lives [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. This punishment operates on a strict principle of measure for measure. Since an impoverished person depends entirely on the little they have just to survive, taking their money is identical to taking their life. Therefore, God will take the lives of the oppressors in return [רלב״ג, אלשיך]. Ultimately, this establishes a clear standard for society. Any interaction with the weak, even in situations where they must be judged or corrected, must be handled with profound mercy and respect [שטיינזלץ].
