Proverbs 22:21Sefaria

Acquiring wisdom goes far beyond simply memorizing facts; it is about developing a deep, crystal-clear understanding that allows a person to face life's challenges and transmit knowledge with precision. There is a subtle but profound difference between basic truth and absolute clarity. General truth remains true even when its underlying reasons are completely hidden from human understanding. However, the ultimate goal of wisdom is to reach a level of truth that is fully revealed, logical, and thoroughly explained. This type of truth is understood by everyone and shines with the clarity of a beautiful jewel [מלבי״ם]. It embodies accuracy and deep loyalty to reality [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The purpose of gaining this absolute truth is to clearly distinguish it from falsehood, ensuring that a person is never accidentally misled [מצודת דוד]. In the realm of study, it enables an individual to navigate the many different approaches within the Torah and arrive at the exact, correct practical ruling [אלשיך]. Once a person grasps this truth and the logic behind it so clearly, they are fully equipped to turn outward and explain the deep reasons behind the wisdom to others in a well-reasoned, articulate manner [מלבי״ם].

When it comes to sharing this well-reasoned truth, there are several perspectives on who exactly is meant to receive these answers. The primary approach among commentators is that the answers are directed at people seeking knowledge. This includes individuals asking for practical guidance and legal rulings [רש״י, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or even parents who originally sent their child to study [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a simple, practical level, it is also about being a loyal messenger who gives an honest and accurate report to the people who sent them on a mission [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond these interpersonal interactions, other interpretations take a more spiritual or defensive approach. Some explain that the recipient of this truth is actually God. Since the human intellect acts as the Creator's messenger, a person ultimately returns these words of truth to God, who sent the human soul into this world [אבן עזרא, אלשיך]. A completely different perspective views this exchange as a form of defense against negative influences. In this view, acquiring clear truth empowers a person to give a decisive, undeniable response to those who try to mislead them or push them away from the proper path [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].
