A person pushed to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion feels as though their very life force is being consumed by flames. This intense suffering brings a sense of impending doom, prompting an urgent plea for God to answer quickly before all is lost [מלבי״ם].

Human life under extreme distress is compared to an object thrown into a fire. Just as burning material turns into smoke and vanishes, a person's days can disappear without purpose, eaten away by hardship and pain [רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This imagery of smoke captures how rapidly the good times seem to pass by and fade away [מצודת דוד]. On a deeper, psychological level, the fire represents internal agony burning within the body. The resulting smoke serves as a metaphor for the despair and confusion that rise from the heart to cloud the mind, threatening to wipe away the value of a lifetime of good deeds [אלשיך].

The imagery of the fire then moves deeper, reaching into the very core of the body. The source of this intense heat is likened to a permanent furnace or a burning hearth [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד], while others view it simply as a blazing flame [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. However, the crushing weight of illness, trouble, or a fire sent by God causes them to become completely parched and dried out from within [אבן עזרא, מאירי, מלבי״ם].

These elements come together to create a powerful picture of a person acting as the wood inside a fire. The parts that burn completely and float away as smoke represent the fleeting days of life. What is left behind—the bones—remain trapped in the furnace, charred, severely dried, and slowly burning away [מאירי, מלבי״ם].
