Psalms 102:8Sefaria

Deep feelings of profound loneliness, alienation, and vulnerability define the experience of a person suffering in exile. Like an abandoned and helpless bird torn from its natural home, the individual feels entirely cut off from the world. This suffering takes several distinct forms. For some, it manifests as a desperate rush to escape from the presence of others Conversely, it can result in complete fixation, where a person remains frozen in one spot, entirely alone and unable to move The pain of exile is also measured in the exhaustion of time and effort. It is felt in the constant, restless wandering from place to place [רד"ק], the agony of a prolonged and seemingly endless wait [אלשיך], and the relentless struggle required just to slightly ease the harsh decrees of foreign rule [מלבי"ם]. Alternatively, this state forces a person into deep inner contemplation, looking only inward as the outside world becomes unbearable [רש"י].

The image of a solitary bird vividly captures this total disconnection. It represents someone completely abandoned, severed from family and separated from a partner This severe isolation brings about a heavy silence. Just as a bird without its mate stops singing, the exiled person is left stunned and entirely mute in the face of such a drawn-out exile [אלשיך].

Finding oneself on a roof further highlights this sense of being exposed and discarded. Even if an exiled person sits physically within the walls of a safe house, they still feel as though they are stranded on a bare roof—completely vulnerable, surrounded by a foreign nation, and cut off from their own community without any support Furthermore, this marginalization was sometimes a harsh physical reality. Under severe decrees, an exile might be permitted to stay in a city but forbidden from living inside a proper home, forced instead to seek out a lonely, makeshift shelter on the exposed corners of rooftops [מלבי"ם].
