From the depths of exile and poverty, a person in distress reaches out to God, seeking a direct and immediate connection. This plea involves two distinct channels of communication: a formal prayer and a desperate cry. Prayer represents the pouring out of the soul and a deep attachment to God, typically offered on behalf of the entire community. In contrast, a cry is an intensely personal shout [ביאור שטיינזלץ] from an individual seeking salvation for themselves [מלבי״ם].

Asking God to hear a prayer raises a natural question, as God inherently hears everything. One perspective suggests this is a plea for the prayer's acceptance to be made visible in the world, so all people can clearly see that God has answered [אבן עזרא]. Another approach notes that the act of asking someone to listen can imply distance. A person who feels unworthy and far from God begs Him to listen directly, rather than delegating the task to an angelic messenger [אלשיך].

There is a sharp contrast between how the prayer and the cry reach God. While the prayer involves a request to be heard across a distance, the personal cry simply comes directly to Him. The idea of the cry arriving, rather than traveling or ascending to heaven, is deeply significant. During times of exile, the gates of formal prayer may seem locked. However, when a person is brokenhearted, destitute, and in pain, God draws very close and stands right beside them. Therefore, a raw shout born of suffering does not need to make a long journey to the heavens. It arrives instantly and directly to God, who is already standing near the broken individual [אלשיך].
