תהלים, פרק קמ״ג, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 143:9Sefaria

הַצִּילֵ֖נִי מֵאֹיְבַ֥י ׀ יְהֹוָ֗ה אֵלֶ֥יךָ כִסִּֽתִי׃

A person in deep distress often finds themselves entirely alone when facing those who wish them harm. Yet, out of this profound isolation grows a deeply intimate and exclusive connection with the Creator. Recognizing that human assistance is ultimately empty, the suffering individual chooses to keep their pain a secret from the world, directing their cries for salvation straight to God.

When asking for rescue from these adversaries, their exact nature can be understood in different ways. They might be physical enemies lying in wait to ambush a person on their journey [מלבי״ם]. Conversely, these foes can be viewed as spiritual threats, such as the evil inclination and the negative forces generated by a person's own sins. These spiritual enemies are far more dangerous than physical ones because they actively build a wall of separation between an individual and God [אלשיך].

In expressing this plea, the individual describes a unique state of being hidden or covered before God. This concept can simply mean seeking shelter, expressing a desire to find protection and a safe haven with Him [אבן עזרא בשם ר׳ מרינוס, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it reflects the individual's absolute trust in God, which motivates them to conceal their struggles from everyone else, relying solely on Him rather than asking for human intervention [מאירי].

The primary approach among commentators is that this act of hiding is a deliberate choice to keep one's troubles away from human eyes, knowing that people lack the true power to save. Instead, the individual uncovers these burdens in complete secrecy only to God [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. This concealment can also be highly practical, such as a person hiding their physical escape route and safe house from the world, sharing the secret of their location with God alone [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper, more spiritual level, this concept of being covered ties directly back to the threat of spiritual enemies. The individual is begging God for rescue from the very sins that have created a covering and a barrier between them and their Creator. It is a desperate plea for God to step in and save them, ensuring they do not fall further into sin and remain separated from His presence [אלשיך].
