תהלים, פרק קמ״ז, פסוק י״ז

Psalms 147:17Sefaria

מַשְׁלִ֣יךְ קַֽרְח֣וֹ כְפִתִּ֑ים לִפְנֵ֥י קָ֝רָת֗וֹ מִ֣י יַעֲמֹֽד׃

The harsh realities of winter weather and extreme cold serve as a powerful testament to God's might and His constant supervision over the world. The freezing temperatures bring forth various forms of ice, whether it is the solid layer that forms over bodies of water during the winter [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד] or different types of frozen precipitation like snow and hail [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This is not ordinary frost, but rather a fearsome and incredibly powerful ice [אבן עזרא].

Observers of nature note different ways this freezing power manifests. One perspective describes the freezing water turning into small, delicate particles, much like falling flakes [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another approach envisions large, broken pieces of ice. These resemble thick blocks or scattered crumbs that fall with great force, often in the late hours of the night [רד"ק, אלשיך, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. Painting an even more striking picture, it can appear as though God casts down a single, massive sheet of ice that instantly covers and freezes the entire surface of the water from edge to edge [מצודת דוד].

Beyond the physical description, the extreme cold reflects deeper aspects of divine action, balancing compassion and strict judgment. On one hand, God acts with mercy by adjusting the intensity of the cold to fit the human condition. He carefully tailors the weather to ease the freezing temperatures for the poor who lack adequate clothing [רש"י]. On the other hand, severe cold is also an instrument of strict judgment. Weather hazards are never random; they operate strictly by God's command. While normal rain and snow fall with mercy to nourish seeds and trees, extreme ice sometimes serves as a form of punishment, drying up and destroying crops and tree blossoms [רד"ק].

Ultimately, humanity is left completely helpless in the face of such freezing temperatures. No person can survive the sheer power of the cold without actively seeking out ways to stay warm [מצודת דוד]. This vulnerability has a profound practical effect, as the extreme chill simply paralyzes daily life. It forces people to remain indoors, preventing them from leaving their homes and going about their regular work [רד"ק].
