Jerusalem enjoys a state of absolute divine protection, which brings deep security and abundance to its people. The imagery of securing the city's gates with heavy crossbeams [מצודת ציון] is not meant to be taken literally. Instead, the primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a metaphor for God's watchful care. This divine guard guarantees that enemies cannot approach or conquer the city, allowing the people to live in safety and without fear.
A contrast emerges when considering other prophetic visions, which promise that Jerusalem's gates will remain forever open. To resolve how the city can be both securely locked and constantly open, the barriers are understood not as physical objects. Rather, God places a divine wall of fire around the city to keep threats away [אלשיך].
As a result of this absolute security, God grants great blessings to the inhabitants. This divine favor brings a growing population of children who will stand strong against enemies [מצודת דוד], alongside success in all their daily efforts [רד״ק, מאירי]. The blessing is experienced entirely within the city itself. The residents will never need to wander to distant places to find food or fight battles, as they will discover complete wealth and comfort right at home [מלבי״ם]. Building on the concept of the fiery wall, this internal blessing also ensures the people will remain completely unharmed by the heat of the divine fire. Even as their numbers multiply, they will never be forced to step outside the safety of God's protection, thriving joyfully and securely within the city [אלשיך].
