הַ֥לְלוּ־יָ֨הּ ׀ כִּי־ט֭וֹב זַמְּרָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ כִּי־נָ֝עִ֗ים נָאוָ֥ה תְהִלָּֽה׃

True gratitude arises from reflecting on how God guides the Israelites through both the natural world and the sweeping events of history. Looking toward the future, this call to sing to God is a prophetic vision anticipating the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the gathering of the exiled Israelites [אבן עזרא, מאירי]. It serves as a direct continuation of the promises of redemption that precede it [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

The simple act of raising a voice in song to God [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מאירי] is not merely a moral duty. The primary approach among commentators is that singing is an experience that actively generates happiness and goodness for the person offering the praise [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this goodness refers directly to God, as He Himself is inherently good [מצודת דוד].

Addressing God in a personal and collective manner highlights His special connection with the Israelites and the miraculous, individual care He provides them [מלבי״ם]. Yet, this specific reference also carries an undertone of strict justice. It suggests that praise is demanded even during the painful periods of exile, because God's ultimate goodness is hidden within those very hardships [אלשיך].

Singing to God carries a distinct sweetness. The act is inherently pleasant [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ] because God Himself is pleasant and bestows kindness [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. The primary approach among commentators is that offering this praise is a beautiful and entirely fitting response to His actions [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that this praise is a deeply desired and yearned for experience, rather than just an aesthetic beauty [אבן עזרא].

These expressions of worship actually represent two distinct levels of gratitude. The act of singing is the highest form, reserved for miraculous and extraordinary acts of kindness, which is why it is defined as fundamentally good. General praise, however, is offered for everyday kindnesses and the ordinary management of the world. Because it reflects the natural order, this level of worship is described in terms of beauty and structure, as something pleasant and fitting [מלבי״ם].
