Psalms 147:4Sefaria

Divine providence is not limited to the earth; it stretches across the entire universe, reaching the most distant celestial bodies. Just as God gathers the scattered exiles of Israel from all corners of the world, He governs the vast array of stars scattered throughout space, knowing each one perfectly [אבן עזרא].

While human beings are completely incapable of counting the stars, God knows their exact number because He is their Creator The human inability to comprehend the night sky stems from several limitations. The heavens are in a constant, dizzying motion. If a person cannot even know the number of teeth in their own mouth, they certainly cannot grasp the vastness of the cosmos [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, the human eye can only detect the largest and brightest celestial bodies, missing tens of thousands of smaller, hidden ones. The immense distance from earth also creates an illusion, causing entire clusters of stars to appear as a single point of light [רד״ק, מאירי].

God’s accounting goes far beyond a general tally; He attends to every specific detail [אבן עזרא]. Some suggest this includes the countless, unseen forces that radiate from the stars themselves [מאירי]. Rather than treating the stars as a random, nameless mass, God gives each one a specific name. This name is a reflection of the star's true essence, its purpose, and its unique power within nature Calling a star by its name acts as a divine summons, commanding it to report for duty [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and ensuring that no celestial body ever abandons its assigned post [אבן עזרא]. Each star is given a specific role in influencing the physical world below, carrying out the principle that every blade of grass has a corresponding star directing it to grow [רד״ק, מאירי].

This profound control over the cosmos offers a powerful message about the nature of redemption. While the rest of the world may be subject to the fixed laws of nature and astrology, God stands entirely above this system. He actively directs it and can change its course at will. Therefore, even if the natural order or astrological signs seem unfavorable for Israel, there is never a reason to despair. The same God who determines the exact number and names of the stars holds ultimate authority over all natural forces, using His supreme power to bring down the proud and lift up the humble
