Psalms 147:10Sefaria

לֹ֤א בִגְבוּרַ֣ת הַסּ֣וּס יֶחְפָּ֑ץ לֹא־בְשׁוֹקֵ֖י הָאִ֣ישׁ יִרְצֶֽה׃

Human instinct often measures success and security by raw power, speed, and military advantage. Yet, true closeness to the Creator operates on an entirely different scale. Physical strength, military might, and human agility are not the metrics for winning God's favor. Instead of valuing a transactional exchange of power, God builds His relationship with the world upon loving-kindness and a deep reverence for Him [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators views this as a direct rejection of trusting in physical prowess and tools of war. God does not favor the warrior who relies on the sheer power of a horse to chase down enemies in battle. Similarly, He finds no delight in a person who depends on the strength of his own legs—whether to sprint into combat or to flee from danger [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Human confidence often rests on this physical agility, symbolized by a runner's light and rapid pace [רש״י], or the sturdy stance of a cavalry rider [אבן עזרא].

On a broader historical level, this concept serves as a source of strength for Israel as they look toward future redemption. They are encouraged not to fear the massive armies of other nations that place their confidence in cavalry and rapid troop movements. God does not value these nations or their military might [מאירי].

Taking a completely different approach, another perspective connects this idea to the way God provides for His creations. Just as God does not force a horse to use its immense strength to prepare its own meals, but rather provides its food directly, He ideally does not want to burden humanity with the exhausting, backbreaking labor of plowing and planting that relies heavily on human physical endurance. In its most perfect state, God desires to provide human sustenance freely and abundantly through His grace, just as He naturally feeds the animal kingdom [אלשיך].
