Psalms 147:6Sefaria

מְעוֹדֵ֣ד עֲנָוִ֣ים יְהֹוָ֑ה מַשְׁפִּ֖יל רְשָׁעִ֣ים עֲדֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃

God's direct involvement in the world is deeply tied to the moral state of humanity, often turning human reality completely upside down. Despite His immense power and greatness, God chooses to personally watch over the humble and the weak, granting them strength and elevation [מצודת ציון]. At the same time, He takes those who are wicked and proud and brings them all the way down to the ground [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

On a national and historical level, the humble represent the Israelites who have been scattered and lowered in exile, while the wicked represent the foreign kings who have subjugated them [אבן עזרא]. The ultimate redemption of the people depends entirely on the merit of this humility. When a person makes himself small, he becomes a resting place for the Divine Presence. This internal act of lowering oneself is so highly valued by God that it is considered as if the person had offered every possible sacrifice [חומת אנך].

This ability to suddenly raise the lowly and bring down the proud serves as proof of God's absolute control over the laws of nature and the celestial bodies. While the natural influence of the stars operates slowly and gradually, God can overturn the entire cosmic system in the blink of an eye to reward or punish people exactly as their actions deserve [מאירי, אלשיך]. A clear example of this is the Exodus from Egypt. At that time, astrological signs pointed toward disaster for the Israelites and success for the Egyptians. Yet, God acted entirely against the stars, instantly lifting the lowly Israelites while simultaneously bringing the Egyptians down to the earth [אלשיך].

However, human history does not always reflect this perfect justice right away. Often, the wicked appear to enjoy temporary success. The complete and final reality, where the wicked are entirely brought down and the humble are fully elevated, will only be realized in the ultimate future [רד״ק].
