תהלים, פרק ל״ז, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 37:24Sefaria

כִּֽי־יִפֹּ֥ל לֹֽא־יוּטָ֑ל כִּֽי־יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה סוֹמֵ֥ךְ יָדֽוֹ׃

Living an upright life does not provide complete protection from stumbling or facing crises, but it does guarantee constant care that prevents a total collapse. If a person experiences a real, sudden drop—much like physically tumbling off a camel [רש"י, מצודת ציון]—this stumble can take different forms. It might be a sudden loss of wealth or becoming tangled in a web of troubles [רד"ק, מאירי], or it could instead be an internal, mental breakdown [אבן עזרא].

Despite this downward momentum, the individual will never be completely cast down. This type of severe fall evokes the image of an object being hurled from a great height [מלבי"ם] or thrown out into the sea [אבן עזרא]. Even when a righteous person begins to lose their footing, they will not be thrown completely to the ground, nor will they be left abandoned and forsaken [רש"י, רד"ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

The reason this fall is never absolute is due to God's direct support. This dynamic is much like a child holding his father's hand; the child might trip and lose his balance along the way, but he will never crash to the ground because his father's strong grip keeps him steady [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This creates a fundamental difference between the righteous and the wicked. While a wicked person might be completely destroyed by a minor setback, a righteous person has the ability to fall and rise again [רד"ק, מאירי].

Ultimately, these struggles are not signs of God's anger or rejection. Hardships, such as poverty, are delivered through a lens of discipline and love. Just as a father disciplines his son for his own benefit to guide him back to the right path, God uses the difficulty itself as the very tool to support and strengthen the individual [רד"ק, אלשיך].
