Psalms 37:18Sefaria

God's relationship with those who walk an honest path goes far beyond merely watching from above. It is a deep, active involvement in their daily lives and their ultimate destiny. While those who act wickedly face a sudden end to their lives and lose whatever they have gathered, the righteous are promised lasting stability and a secure future.

When God is described as knowing these individuals, it is not a matter of gathering facts or having intellectual awareness. Instead, it is a profound expression of His love, care, and continuous guidance He intimately recognizes and watches over their actions every single day [רש״י]. This divine care directly impacts the span of their lives. God actively protects them so they can live out their full years, in sharp contrast to the wicked whose bad choices cut their time short God knows exactly how many years they will live [מצודת דוד], carefully allots their time, and ensures that all their needs are met along the way [מאירי]. On a deeper level, God’s close attention actually brings holiness into their daily routines. The days themselves become infused with this spiritual energy, transforming into lasting, living spiritual entities [אלשיך].

The reward for living such a life is an inheritance that lasts forever. Commentators offer different perspectives on when and where this eternal reward takes place. One approach suggests this refers to the World to Come, where the righteous will receive their permanent reward from God after their time on earth is complete Another perspective focuses on the present world, noting that even if the righteous have only a little, their portion remains completely secure throughout their lives [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, unlike the wicked who cannot hold onto their wealth to pass it down, honest individuals are able to leave their blessings to their children A final approach bridges these ideas, explaining that the spiritual inheritance of the righteous is truly eternal, providing them with profound benefits both in this present world and in the World to Come [אלשיך].
