תהלים, פרק ל״ז, פסוק י״ז

Psalms 37:17Sefaria

כִּ֤י זְרוֹע֣וֹת רְ֭שָׁעִים תִּשָּׁבַ֑רְנָה וְסוֹמֵ֖ךְ צַדִּיקִ֣ים יְהֹוָֽה׃

The power of those who do evil, no matter how threatening and massive it may appear, is ultimately doomed to fail. In sharp contrast, good people are granted a steady and permanent foundation by God. This stark difference between sudden shattering and enduring support highlights the gap between the temporary success of wickedness and the lasting existence of justice.

Physical arms are a universal symbol of power and strength [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that the ability of the wicked to cause harm will be completely shattered. The very arms that draw back bows to strike at the righteous will break in the process, effectively stopping any damage [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. While the wicked lose their strength, God personally holds up the righteous. He provides support so they do not collapse or fall from the anxiety and fear caused by these threats [רד״ק]. This act of Divine backing serves as the exact opposite to the breaking of the evildoers' strength [אבן עזרא].

Another layer of meaning connects this strength to property and material assets. From this perspective, the abundant wealth held by the wicked has no real future. Their fortunes will eventually break apart and slip from their grasp. On the other hand, God supports the righteous by ensuring that even the small amount they possess will last and endure, outliving the vast but temporary riches of the wicked [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. A clear historical example of this concept is seen in the events surrounding Abraham and the King of Sodom. The assets of the wicked king were shattered and lost, while God supported Abraham, enriching him without him ever needing to rely on the wealth of Sodom [אלשיך].
