The primary approach among commentators is that this encompasses all of a person's individual needs [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד], along with their general lifestyle and daily activities [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Taking a different angle, [מלבי״ם] understands this more literally as the actual path and methods used to achieve a specific goal. He explains that a person who lacks trust in God is constantly anxious, endlessly searching for various ways to secure a livelihood. Instead, the guidance is to hand over the journey itself to God, trusting that He will prepare the correct route to the final destination.

Adding a deeper, internal layer to this process, [אלשיך] explains that a person must direct their requests toward a higher spiritual purpose. Even when asking for basic material needs, the motivation should not be for personal pleasure or to show off. Rather, one must elevate the reason for the request, such as seeking a livelihood specifically to gain the strength to serve God and support the poor.

This level of reliance demands depending solely on God, without looking to any other factors or alternative means [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It requires complete faith, free from even the slightest trace of doubt [אלשיך]. When a person achieves this absolute trust, the promise is that God will step in to finish the work. He will provide exactly what the person needs, fulfill their desires [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי], and ultimately do whatever is right and proper [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
