מִזְמ֖וֹר לְדָוִ֣ד לְהַזְכִּֽיר׃

A man weighed down by severe illness, surrounded by enemies, and burdened by his own sins makes an unexpected choice. Instead of crying out in despair, he opens his plea with a song. King David desires to repent and accepts his suffering with love, transforming his deep pain into a song of praise [אלשיך]. Finding joy even in distress serves a vital purpose, as the Divine Presence only rests upon a person who is in a state of joy [חומת אנך].

The core theme of this opening is the act of remembering, though commentators offer varied perspectives on what exactly is being remembered and who is meant to hear it. While some view the opening simply as a musical direction or the title of the hymn [אבן עזרא, רד״ק], others understand it as a call to thank God and make His name known to the world [רד״ק, מאירי].

Beyond a musical note or general praise, many commentators view this as a profound prayer born from crisis, differing on the true focus of the remembrance. One approach suggests the prayer is meant to bring the sufferer and his pain to God's attention. In this light, David speaks on behalf of all the Israelites during times of trouble, presenting their collective distress before God [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On the other hand, the song may be designed to remind the individual of his own actions. Having composed this prayer after falling desperately ill following the events with Bathsheba, David seeks to remind himself of his past mistakes, ensuring his sins remain constantly before his eyes as a prompt for personal growth [מלבי״ם].

Broadening this idea, a major approach views the prayer as a message for all of humanity. David did not record these words solely for his own benefit, but crafted a universal guide to awaken the hearts of others. It serves to remind and teach anyone crushed by physical illness, emotional pain, or life's hardships how to find their way back to God, confess their wrongs, and sincerely ask for His mercy [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].
