Psalms 38:9Sefaria

נְפוּג֣וֹתִי וְנִדְכֵּ֣יתִי עַד־מְאֹ֑ד שָׁ֝אַ֗גְתִּי מִֽנַּהֲמַ֥ת לִבִּֽי׃

Human distress can reach an extreme breaking point where both body and spirit collapse under the weight of suffering, causing inner pain to burst outward in a fierce cry. The primary approach among commentators is that this state reflects deep weakness, slackness, and absolute helplessness of the heart. It is not merely a physical failing, but a profound breaking and depression of the spirit [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This condition represents a fundamental cooling of the body, similar to the loss of taste and smell, signaling the fading away of a person's life force [רש״י, המאירי]. It paints the picture of a person standing on the brink of death. Their inner strength and external limbs have completely given out, leaving only the heart to struggle through its final moments [מלבי״ם].

Offering a completely different perspective, another approach suggests that this numbness actually describes a pause in physical suffering. Paradoxically, it is precisely when the bodily pain subsides that a person feels most deeply crushed. At that moment, they realize their true anguish is not the physical illness, but rather the deep sorrow of feeling spiritually distant from God [אלשיך].

Out of this profound physical or spiritual breaking, a powerful cry emerges. The sheer intensity of the illness and pain forces a person to cry out loudly like a lion, driven by the intense groaning of their heart [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. This is no superficial complaint; it is a genuine, sincere scream erupting from the very depths of one's being [מצודת דוד]. More than just an expression of agony, this loud cry serves as a fierce prayer and a desperate plea to God. It breaks forth once the person recognizes the misdeeds that brought about their suffering [המאירי].

A careful look at this reaction reveals a deep inner contrast. While the heart's groaning reflects sorrow and the pain of loss, a loud roar is often associated with sounds of joy and a sense of fullness. This contrast reveals that even in the darkest, most terrible moments, just as the heart breathes its bitter and seemingly final sigh, a new hope suddenly awakens. Gathering whatever little strength remains, a person can transform a groan of pure despair into a roaring prayer filled with hope and expectation [מלבי״ם].
