תהלים, פרק ל״ח, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 38:22Sefaria

אַל־תַּעַזְבֵ֥נִי יְהֹוָ֑ה אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י אַל־תִּרְחַ֥ק מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

After enduring a long period of intense physical and emotional suffering, a person naturally longs for connection and safety. Shifting focus from the agony itself, a desperate plea is made for God's closeness and protection [מאירי].

This deep need for divine presence arises from a feeling of total helplessness against those who mock him. Unable to fight back or answer his tormentors on his own, the sufferer turns to God, asking that He remain by his side. The very presence of God serves as the ultimate, undeniable response to the taunts of his enemies [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this plea directly challenges the false assumptions of his attackers, who mistakenly believe that he has been left completely alone, without any helper or supporter [רד״ק].

The cry for God to stay close carries a dual significance. Primarily, it is a straightforward request for God to be near and attentive to his desperate cries [רד״ק]. At the same time, it highlights a painful contrast: while his own friends and loved ones distanced themselves and stood by idly during his time of trouble, he begs God to do the exact opposite and remain close [אבן עזרא].

Yet, even within this profound distress, this prayer represents more than just a plea for help. It is a powerful expression of deep faith and confidence. Despite his current suffering, the individual holds onto the absolute certainty that God will not abandon him. By recognizing God as his personal God, he remains fully confident that He will never truly distance Himself [אלשיך].
