Psalms 58:6Sefaria

אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־יִ֭שְׁמַע לְק֣וֹל מְלַחֲשִׁ֑ים חוֹבֵ֖ר חֲבָרִ֣ים מְחֻכָּֽם׃

A vivid image of a stubborn snake refusing to submit serves as a powerful metaphor for deep-seated wickedness. The primary approach among commentators is that this imagery focuses on a specific type of snake that intentionally seals its ears to block out the voices of those trying to control it [ביאור שטיינזלץ, רש"י]. The people trying to tame the creature are experts who know how to whisper to animals and influence their behavior [רש"י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is a progression in the level of skill involved in this process. While a standard charmer might influence a single snake, a master of the craft possesses the ability to gather and control many snakes at once [מלבי"ם]. These masters are highly skilled and wise in their work [רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. However, because of its inherently evil nature, this particular snake completely refuses to listen, resisting even the most expert and capable charmer [מצודת דוד, מאירי].

Beyond the physical description of the animal, this creates a sharp metaphor for human cruelty and closed-mindedness. The intentionally deaf snake represents wicked individuals who refuse to listen to the call for justice from righteous people, holding their ground even when faced with every possible method of persuasion [רד"ק]. This comparison is especially directed at those who speak slander. Such people are compared to a snake that bites without gaining any personal pleasure or benefit. In fact, these individuals are considered worse than a regular snake, which can at least be influenced by a charmer. They remain completely closed off to reason and logical arguments. A historical parallel is found in the men of King Saul, who stubbornly refused to take back their slanderous words against David, even after David presented them with clear and absolute proof of his innocence [אלשיך].
