The identity of this voice is a subject of discussion. It can be understood as the personal song of any righteous individual experiencing God's blessing [רד״ק]. Alternatively, it represents the collective voice of the entire nation [מאירי], or it belongs specifically to King David, speaking on behalf of his royal line [אלשיך].

The speaker's sudden rise to power is captured through the imagery of a towering, powerful horn. This conveys both immense height [אבן עזרא] and raw, unstoppable strength [מאירי], serving as a metaphor for a person stepping into a role of greatness and influence [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Just as God is elevated, the righteous person who follows Him is lifted up in a corresponding manner [אבן עזרא].

Following this rise to power, the imagery shifts to being covered in fresh, rich oil. The primary approach among commentators is that this depicts a physical anointing, where the speaker is bathed in moist, fresh oil. However, another perspective views the language here as related to aging and wearing out. In this light, the fresh oil represents a renewed vitality, showing that even in old age, a person can be blessed with youthfulness and energy [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical picture, the oil carries deep symbolic meaning. It represents an ascent to leadership and authority [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], as well as an endless flow of goodness, constant joy, and unending wealth [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].
