תהלים, פרק צ״ד, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 94:2Sefaria

הִ֭נָּשֵׂא שֹׁפֵ֣ט הָאָ֑רֶץ הָשֵׁ֥ב גְּ֝מ֗וּל עַל־גֵּאִֽים׃

A powerful plea echoes for the Creator to reveal His ultimate authority and bring true justice to a world suffering under arrogance. It is a call for the sole ruler of the earth to step forward and address those who walk with unchecked pride. The request is for God to rise, make His majesty known, and act as the true judge of the world. By doing so, He is asked to punish the proud and repay them exactly as their actions deserve [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This call for divine elevation serves as a direct reaction to the arrogance of the wicked [אבן עזרא]. The purpose of God revealing His supremacy is to prove to these arrogant individuals that He alone is truly exalted, which in turn brings about their punishment [רד״ק]. There is a fundamental conflict between the divine presence and human arrogance, as God and a proud person cannot coexist in the same world. Therefore, the plea for God to elevate Himself is a call to eliminate the pride of the wicked, leading to their destruction, because the world cannot contain two proud powers [אלשיך]. This arrogance is not merely a flaw directed at other people; it is an outright defiance aimed directly at God Himself [מצודת דוד].

There are several ways to understand how this requested divine intervention should unfold [אלשיך]. Even if the time has not yet arrived for complete and final justice against the nations, the hope is that God will at least reveal Himself partially. Alternatively, even if the Israelites are not currently worthy of being avenged for the harm caused by the nations, God is asked to act for His own honor. In this view, God is asked to set aside the specific conflict between Israel and the nations, choosing instead to punish the wicked strictly for their insolence toward Him. Finally, this intervention can be understood through the balance of God's attributes. Because divine mercy naturally extends patience and delays punishment, the request is for the attribute of strict justice to rise from its hidden state and strike the proud immediately and without further delay.
