תהלים, פרק צ״ד, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 94:5Sefaria

עַמְּךָ֣ יְהֹוָ֣ה יְדַכְּא֑וּ וְֽנַחֲלָתְךָ֥ יְעַנּֽוּ׃

The transition from malicious intent to brutal action marks a dark turning point in the persecution of a nation. Theoretical wickedness escalates into physical harm as oppressors, having previously boasted in their thoughts and speech, now commit actual acts of cruelty [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that the victims, referred to as both a people and a heritage, simply represent the nation of Israel or the inhabitants of the land [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The attacks against them involve severe physical breaking and the infliction of deep suffering [מצודת ציון]. Interestingly, this specific phase of oppression targets the strong and established members of society. The wrongdoers harm these prominent figures under the cover of official authority, whereas they simply murder the defenseless—such as widows and orphans—without any hesitation or need for government cover [רד״ק].

While some view the descriptions of the victims as synonymous, others see a clear progression in both the targets and the types of suffering. The concept of a people represents the general public and their physical, political connection to God, whereas the heritage refers to the righteous individuals who share a profound spiritual bond with Him [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. The violence aligns with this division: the physical body of the nation is violently crushed, while the righteous endure a deep mental and spiritual subjugation [מלבי״ם]. This reveals a calculated escalation by the oppressors. They begin by attacking the general masses, and once they realize there are no consequences to stop them, their arrogance grows, leading them to strike at the holy individuals who are closest to God [אלשיך].

A completely different perspective shifts the speaker of these painful realities. Rather than a cry for help from the persecuted, these realities are understood as the mocking taunts of the wrongdoers themselves. The oppressors turn directly to God, throwing the suffering of His nation in His face. They use the crushing and affliction of the innocent as proof to defy Him, arguing that if He allows such a harsh reality to exist without executing justice, it proves there is no divine providence or intervention in the world [מלבי״ם].
