תהלים, פרק צ״ו, פסוק ו׳

Psalms 96:6Sefaria

הוֹד־וְהָדָ֥ר לְפָנָ֑יו עֹ֥ז וְ֝תִפְאֶ֗רֶת בְּמִקְדָּשֽׁוֹ׃

A profound radiance and majesty constantly surround God, serving as permanent adornments within His divine courtyard [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These magnificent traits belong exclusively to God, standing in absolute contrast to the powerless idols of the nations [אבן עזרא].

God’s presence is characterized by a delicate balance of hidden essence and outward expression. Certain qualities represent His internal nature and intrinsic power, while others reflect the visible beauty of His wondrous deeds in the world. From God's innermost being, His leadership extends outward into His sanctuary. His intrinsic power drives the constant, natural order of the universe, while His visible splendor is revealed through His miraculous interventions [מלבי״ם].

The exact nature of this divine sanctuary is understood in several ways. One perspective views it as a vast cosmic reality, where the stars and the heavens themselves serve as God's holy dwelling, constantly acknowledging His greatness [רד״ק]. Alternatively, it represents the spiritual realms, with the angels standing directly before Him and the heavenly spheres acting as His sanctuary [מאירי]. A different approach grounds this concept in the physical world, identifying the sanctuary as the earthly Temple that housed the Ark of the Covenant [אבן עזרא].

Recognizing the sanctuary as the earthly Temple raises a profound historical and theological question: If God’s dwelling is filled with such immense strength and beauty, how could foreign nations successfully destroy it? The answer lies in understanding the true nature of divine power. The full manifestation of God's majesty depends on the presence of righteous people who protect the nation. When the righteous are absent, as they were on the day the Temple fell, God demonstrates His strength not through overwhelming physical force, but through profound restraint. He holds back His anger and endures the desecration of His holy place to avoid wiping out the Israelites entirely in His wrath. In such tragic moments, God exercises the quiet strength of restraint, but the visible glory is lost, leaving the enemies of Israel to freely mock and disgrace the sanctuary [אלשיך].
