תהלים, פרק צ״ז, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 97:12Sefaria

שִׂמְח֣וּ צַ֭דִּיקִים בַּיהֹוָ֑ה וְ֝הוֹד֗וּ לְזֵ֣כֶר קׇדְשֽׁוֹ׃ {פ}

A profound call is made to the righteous to find joy and offer thanks, rooting their happiness in a deep connection with God and a clear recognition of His holiness. This invitation to rejoice serves as an encouragement to lean entirely on God's support [מצודת דוד]. Such joy naturally flows from a loving attachment between God and the righteous, a bond powerful enough to bring about miracles and wonders on their behalf [מלבי״ם].

Looking toward the future, this joy is also understood as a message directed at the exiled Israelites. It anticipates their future celebration over a great salvation and their ultimate release from exile [מאירי]. At the same time, this call to happiness offers deep comfort to those who experience suffering in the present world. Because the Divine Presence is also considered to be in a state of exile, a righteous person finds comfort in sharing this reality, mirroring his Creator. This shared experience is held alongside the hope for a perfect joy in the higher world, or in a future time when God Himself will rejoice in His creations [אלשיך].

Alongside the call to joy is an instruction to express gratitude whenever God's holiness is mentioned [ביאור שטיינזלץ], directing thanks toward the memory of His holy name [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This gratitude is not meant simply for the everyday, natural running of the world. Rather, it focuses specifically on remembering the miracles and wonders that rise above the laws of nature, as these extraordinary events are the true expression of His holiness [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, this profound gratitude is offered to God for the very fact that He has planted the memory of His holiness directly inside the righteous themselves [אלשיך].
