A new prophetic revelation serves as a gateway to a broader message dedicated to glorifying and elevating the House of God. God granted this vision to the prophet even before the returning exiles arrived in Jerusalem, purposefully preparing the ground for the foundation of the Temple [אבן עזרא].

The timing and content of this divine communication spark a significant debate regarding the specific era it addresses. The primary approach among commentators is that the vision focuses on the Second Temple period and centers around Zerubbabel, the leader of the people at that time.

However, a contrasting view completely rejects this historical placement. Later details in the prophecy describe a leader rising to power, sitting on a royal throne, and bearing absolute majesty. These grand descriptions do not align with the historical reality of the Second Temple era. Zerubbabel never actually ruled as a king in Jerusalem; his role was strictly focused on the physical construction of the Temple. Because of this historical discrepancy, the prophecy must instead point to the distant future, specifically focusing on the building of the ultimate future Temple and the Messianic era [אברבנאל].
