עמוס, פרק ט׳, פסוק י׳

Amos 9:10Sefaria

The total destruction facing the wrongdoers among the Israelites stems from more than just their sins. It is rooted in a deep denial of God's watchful care and the reality of reward and punishment. These wicked individuals [ביאור שטיינזלץ] are compared to useless waste and chaff that fall through a sieve [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Because of their actions, they will face death by the swords of foreign nations, whereas the righteous will be spared and kept alive [מצודת דוד]. Some point out that the prophet's focus here is specifically on the wrongdoers of his time who actively denied that any disaster was coming, setting them apart from other sinners who only suffered exile [רד״ק].

The core of their failure lies in their arrogant claim that ruin will not hurry to approach them as a result of their sins [רש״י]. The primary approach among commentators is that this attitude reflects absolute heresy regarding God's guidance of the world. These individuals operate under the belief that there is no ultimate justice and that the world runs on its own, without a divine leader [מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה]. In their eyes, even if tragedy were to strike, it would not be a punishment from God directed at their behavior, but rather a completely random accident [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

Believing that disaster is just a matter of chance and will not target the wicked before the righteous, they feel completely unrestricted. This twisted worldview allows them to do whatever they please, giving in entirely to their own desires without any fear of facing consequences [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].
