The absolute authority of a ruler leaves no room for criticism or appeal. A king's command is the very instrument of his power [ביאור שטיינזלץ], allowing his influence to extend everywhere without interruption [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. This image of a human monarch serves as a foundation for understanding God's leadership over the universe. If people do not dare question the actions of an earthly king, it is even more unthinkable to challenge the true King, whose glory fills all existence [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, it is God whose word governs the entire world [רש״י].
Because His authority is absolute, no one can demand an explanation for His actions. This reality counters those who look at worldly events through flawed human logic, falsely accuse God of injustice, and wrongly conclude that there is no Divine providence or free will. In truth, every human event falls under God's decree and His complete supervision [תעלומות חכמה]. This supreme authority also means that God operates above the very laws He gave to humanity. For example, while people are strictly forbidden from taking revenge or bearing a grudge, God does take vengeance against nations that harm Israel. As the ultimate sovereign, it is within His royal nature to avenge His enemies [תורה תמימה].
Yet, standing opposite this absolute Divine authority is the remarkable power of the person who fulfills God's commandments. Someone who faithfully observes a commandment is actively protected from harsh decrees [רש״י]. Even more profoundly, a person who performs a commandment with complete perfection possesses the ability to overturn a decree issued by God. In a surprising twist, it is the faithful follower who can, in a sense, tell God what to do, using their spiritual merit to cancel a negative decree [תורה תמימה].
