יחזקאל, פרק כ״ד, פסוק ט׳

A severe judgment falls upon Jerusalem, identified as a city of blood due to the innocent blood spilled within its walls, a tragedy fully remembered by God [מצודת דוד]. The impending punishment operates on a strict principle of measure for measure. Because the residents of the city constantly increased their wickedness and multiplied their sins, God responds by proportionally increasing His vengeance against them [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This divine retribution takes the form of a massive, powerful fire [רש״י]. Building upon the prophetic vision of a cooking pot, God declares His intent to magnify the flames burning beneath it. To achieve this intense heat, wood is added on top of the bones already placed there, since wood ignites and burns much faster than hard bone. The resulting blaze will burn with such overwhelming force that it will completely consume the meat and thoroughly burn away the bones themselves [רד״ק].

Beyond the physical imagery of the cooking pot, the growing fire represents a severe escalation of disaster directly within the city limits. While the flames of war and siege rage fiercely outside the walls, God will simultaneously intensify the internal destruction. The sword, famine, and plague will consume the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the inside, as weapons of war are gathered into the very heart of the city [מלבי״ם].
