Ezekiel 24:5Sefaria

מִבְחַ֤ר הַצֹּאן֙ לָק֔וֹחַ וְגַ֛ם דּ֥וּר הָעֲצָמִ֖ים תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ רַתַּ֣ח רְתָחֶ֔יהָ גַּם־בָּשְׁל֥וּ עֲצָמֶ֖יהָ בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ {ס}

A vivid image of a boiling cooking pot over a roaring fire captures the terrifying reality of a city under siege and facing total destruction. The process of preparing a meat stew serves as a dark metaphor for residents trapped within city walls, absorbing the inescapable heat of war and disaster.

The instruction to take the finest, fattest meat represents the gathering of the nation's elite. The ministers, leaders, and the best of Israel are drawn together and trapped inside the besieged city Another perspective shifts the focus to the attacking forces, viewing this as a command to King Nebuchadnezzar to gather his most elite soldiers to encircle the city

Below the pot, a massive fire is built, arranged in a circle or row However, instead of wood, bones are used as the fuel [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. This bonfire of bones carries a grim symbolism: it represents the innocent victims senselessly murdered by the city's corrupt leaders. The blood of these victims acts as the very fuel that ignites the disaster and brings the suffering of the siege upon them Alternatively, the bones are viewed as being arranged inside the pot beneath the rest of the meat. In this light, the bones symbolize the strong and mighty warriors preparing for battle, supporting the weaker members of the nation on their backs [רש״י].

As the fire blazes, the stew reaches an intense, bubbling boil The heat beneath the pot is so fierce that it cooks even the hard bones inside, indicating that the softer meat has already been completely destroyed by the extreme temperature [מלבי״ם]. This violent boiling illustrates the tightening grip of the siege and the relentless advance of enemy weapons [רש״י]. Ultimately, the cooking of the bones represents the absolute peak of the tragedy. It shows that even the strongest heroes, compared to the unyielding bones, will not be able to withstand the pressure and will fall within the city to the sword, famine, and plague
