יחזקאל, פרק כ״ד, פסוק ד׳

Ezekiel 24:4Sefaria

A vivid image of a cooking pot set over a blazing fire captures the harsh reality of Jerusalem during a time of war. Just as pieces of meat are collected and placed into a boiling pot, the residents of the land are drawn together and concentrated inside the city walls.

The act of gathering these pieces reflects a desperate human movement. As surrounding cities fall to ruin, terrified citizens flee the advancing siege and seek refuge within Jerusalem [רש י ורד״ק]. This mass assembly also serves a protective purpose. The intention is to bring everyone safely behind the city walls, shielding them from the destructive flames of war on the outside. This directly mirrors how meat must be completely submerged in a cooking pot to prevent any part from sticking out and burning in the fire [מלבי״ם].

The specific cuts of meat placed into the pot are of the highest quality, such as the thick, fleshy thigh and shoulder. Alongside these are prime bones, representing limbs carefully separated according to their natural structure. In the context of the besieged city, these choice cuts symbolize the upper class and the elite of the nation who have taken shelter together. These high-ranking individuals include the king, the princes of Judah, the wise men, and the foremost leaders of that era [רש״י, רד״ק, מלבי ם ושטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, these prime pieces and sturdy bones represent the nation's military strength. They embody the mighty warriors, the organized army, and the most fearsome fighters who have assembled in the capital [רש י ומלבי״ם].
